semiotics is a theory known for calling attention to the formal structures of signification, of meaning-making, in culture. in so far as it can be used to reveal the arbitrary or constructed nature of the meanings we use in our everyday lives, semiotics is also a form of social criticism.
traditionally, a myth has been defined as a story or idea that explains the culture or customs of a people. often myths describe heroes or explain why a people revere the sun, or why elders should be respected. myths are the motivating stories or ideas behind common cultural practices.
understanding of myths leaves to common misperception that myths are simply false or superstitious ideas, when actually there purpose is to motivate daily life. according to bathes, the special trick is to present an ethos ideology or set of values as if it were natural.
the myth of britishness
The myth of britishness is an ideology of the British culture as certain objects and events are closely linked to British culture such as tea and biscuits. the media promotes these ideologies and to keep people interested and engaged into the topic they are viewing. these ideologies have been around for a while as they are usually used in the media side of things as they can be used to pull in new audiences and entertain the audience viewing the page.
